Design of Wardens Wrath

Wardens Wrath is a horror game made in Ue4 based on the theme of an abandoned prison. The player is part of a paranormal investigation service and is tasked with retrieving an important dossier that was left behind when the prison was abandoned. During the game, the player will have to discover notes and stealthfully avoid various ghosts and paranormal beings positioned throughout the level.

For this project, I was in charge of a section of the level design, the lighting, as well as making 3d assets for the project. I was under contract with a team of final year students acting as a contractor for a set period of time.

Moodboard for environments

The brief i received was to create levels for a Prison / psychiatric ward style environment with a mix of enclosed, liminal and open spaces to allow for a shift of gameplay from area to area as the player progresses through the game. I created a series of environmental moodboards as a way to construct a level that felt immersive and also moulded itself into providing a fear factor through the limited visibility and variation of space

Node Design / Top Down Plans

During the pre production phase i created a series of top down plans and node diagrams in order to give the team multiple avenues of achieving the same goal. We decided as a team which plan variants to take to the blockout stage. I proceeded to plan out encounter spaces player paths and mapping out enclosed versus open spaces, this was imperative to achieve a balance of fear and uncertainty while simultaneously providing rewards and feedback to the player via the completion of puzzles and evasion of enemies.
